SCCSSAR Mounted Team

The mounted specialty team of Santa Clara County Sheriff's Search & Rescue has a highly skilled and well trained members and the team exists to supplement SCCSSAR's responses. The mounted members may be called upon to assist in a hasty search as a mounted SAR resource can cover far more terrain in a shorter period of time than a team on foot, and a horse can often help locate a victim with its sensitive hearing, sight and smell. Mounted SAR teams may also assist in the transportation of rescue equipment and the evacuation of a subject from a back-country location as well as providing assistance for community events.

Members of the mounted team are required to pass a series of tests to confirm their horsemanship and riding skills, as well as to confirm the ability and suitability of their mount. In an effort to enhance skills and encourage an environment of teamwork and cooperation, the unit conducts their own mandatory monthly training exercises and rides.

Members provide all of their own equipment needed for their horses, including a vehicle and trailer for transportation of their mounts.
